About the painting
The American artist Helen Turner, born in Kentuckey and raised in New Orleans, started painting around 1880, when she enrolled in the New Orleans Art Union. In 1895, she moved to New York where Turner studied at the Design School for Women at Cooper Union. She also to private lessons with William Merritt Chase.
Sinse 1902 Turner had been teaching life and costume drawing at the Y.W.C.A. for over a decade.
Starting 1906 she participated in numerous exhibitions and was very successful during her life, maintaining two studios.
